We can't do this alone.
The Earthwork Harvest Gathering is a celebration of food and music, featuring the freshest of local ingredients and fine imported specialties. A family-friendly Gathering bringing us into contact with the abundance of our community, the Earthwork Harvest Gathering has ripened Michigan's artisan culture since 2000! Attendees camp in the mixed hardwood forests and open meadows of Earthwork Farm every third weekend in September, annually.
The idea of making the volunteer process more efficient than scribbled notes on a beer coaster started in 2008. At that time, we were still plugging names into a spreadsheet by hand. Bill and Josh had been connected to the Earthwork Music community for a long time, and it seemed like a no-brainer to see if they had any ideas that might make the process more 'open and available'. The first version of Help the Herd was not without its flaws, but we could tell right away that it had so much potential. Over the next few years we worked side-by-side to hammer out all the kinks, leaving us with what we have now; an amazing volunteer management system that puts the volunteers in control.
This year we had over 300 volunteers, working almost 700 positions. The entire event is volunteer powered; everything from kitchen staff and dishwashers to kids' tent helpers and stange hands gets staffed through Help the Herd.
